Diabetes and Oral Cavity


Diabetes mellitus / diabetes is a condition where the level / content of glucose in the blood increases due to abnormal insulin production , either decreased production of insulin or the body's inability to produce insulin . Insulin is a hormone that transfers glucose in the blood into the cells or tissues of the body to be used as an energy source . Diabetes can occur because of heredity , obesity , diabetes and even some who just suffered during pregnancy . There are 3 typical symptoms experienced by people with diabetes that is easy to hungry , thirsty easily , and a lot of urine production .

Poor hygiene and oral health can indicate someone is having a systemic disease , one of which diabetes mellitus . Diabetes is very closely related to the disease or tissue damage buffer / backer teeth is medically called periodontal tissues , which damage the tooth supporting tissues and in the gums around the teeth and gums . Other oral conditions that may be an indicator of a person with diabetes is :

- Burning mouth syndrome or syndrome that feel burning sensation in the oral cavity . A person with diabetes has consistently or constantly feel his mouth on fire , no matter what he eats or her drinking . In addition , patients also feel the sensation of bitter / flavor metal / iron in his mouth . And not infrequently also a diabetic breath smells ketones / like acetone .

- Thrush . Thrush is a fungal infection in the oral cavity . Appearance may be a layer of white / yellowish often found on the tongue , inner cheeks , or even the ceiling . This fungus is actually present in the normal oral cavity ecosystem , but because of the conditions experienced by diabetes , makes the body unable to control the proliferation of the fungus , so that breeding becomes redundant .

- Dry mouth syndrome or dry mouth syndrome or also known as xerostomia . When our bodies can not produce enough saliva , then the syndrome will occur . This condition is caused by increased levels of glucose in saliva , whereas diabetic patients had elevated levels of blood glucose not only on but also in saliva . One effect is the increased risk of dental caries .

Which must be performed by a person with diabetes to maintain healthy teeth and mouth is :
- Treated / control to a specialist in internal medicine , especially to get the blood sugar levels are always controlled which will automatically affect the state of the oral cavity .

- Consuming a diet high in fiber is very good for maintaining normal blood sugar levels and helps stimulate the production of saliva, which is very good to get a " self cleansing " in the oral cavity

- Fixed maintain oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least 2 times a day ( after breakfast and just before bed the night ) and rinsing with mouthwash ( non-alcoholic ) after brushing your teeth , as well as diligent in drinking water .

- Routine go to the dentist to check your teeth to be given preventive procedures and dental care is needed .
